For beginners exploring design on a budget, selecting quality fonts that you don’t need to pay for can also be a challenge. Fortunately, Google Fonts provides a diverse collection of free, professionally crafted typefaces.

In this post, I’m diving into what Google fonts are, why font pairings are important and then providing you with 10 great Google font pairings for websites so you don’t have to worry about trying to figure it all out on your own!

What are Google fonts?

Google Fonts is a free and extensive library of open-source web fonts offered by Google. It provides a huge collection of typefaces that can be easily accessed by anyone and can be used for both online and offline projects without a licensing fee.

These fonts are specifically designed for the web, ensuring optimal readability and visual appeal across various devices and screen sizes.

Can I use Google fonts on a website?

Yes! With Google Fonts, users can integrate a wide range of typefaces into their websites.

How many fonts should I use on my website?

I recommend sticking to 2-3 fonts maximum for your brand and website. Any more than that and your website can start to look way too busy.

When designing websites I like to choose one font for the heading and subheading text, one font for the body text, and a third font for accent text. The third font I choose is typically a script font or something more playful depending on the project.

How do I know which fonts to pair?

You want to choose a font that works well for your header and subheader text and another that looks good in big chunks for the body text.

Trying to figure out what font pairings work together can be hard to do if you are not a designer. Fortunately, I have done this for you. Below are 10 great Google font pairings for websites.

1. Cinzel + Montserrat

Cinzel is considered a contemporary font, although it was inspired by first century roman inscriptions. I love pairing this with the geometric sans-serif typeface Montserrat.

2. Oswald + Quattrocento

A strong, condensed header font combined with the classic and elegant quattrocento for body text is a nice balance. Oswald is a thick and condensed font, so use this for headlines and small chunks of text only.

3. Playfair Display and Open Sans

These two fonts pair well together to create a sophisticated and timeless look.

4. DM Serif Display + Poppins

DM Serif is a contemporary font that is great for headlines. Poppins is a san serif font that pairs perfectly with it for a nice, crisp look.

5. Tenor Sans + Work Sans

Tenor Sans is a san serif font that works well for heading or body text. I like to use it for headlines and pair it with the clean font Work Sans.

6. Marcellus + DM Sans

This combination gives off a sophisticated, chic look that I love.

7. Gilda Display + Alegreya Sans

The Gilda Display is a serif font that has a luxurious feel to it in my opinion and adds an elegant and sophisticated vibe to your website. Alegreya Sans is a great pairing with this for body text.

8. Italiana + Lato

Italiana is another Google font that exudes elegance and sophistication. I like pairing this with the modern, professional Lato Google font.

9. Antic Didone + Open Sans

Antic Didone was designed for use in the headlines of newspapers and magazines, so it looks great for website headlines as well. Pair it with the highly versatile sans serif font Open Sans for the body text.

10 . Yseva One + Poppins

Yseva One is a playful, feminine font that pairs well with the Google font Poppins, which gives off a modern and friendly feel.
